CONFORMATION

  • What is it?

Conformation is the dog show competition where purebred dogs are judged against a written standard for their breed. The goal isn’t to pick the “prettiest” dog, but rather, the one that best represents what the breed was originally developed to do. Judges evaluate structure, movement, and temperament; traits that are important for soundness, function, and preservation. It’s both a sport and a tool for responsible breeders to maintain and improve their breeds.

  • Why is it important?

Competing in AKC conformation is an important part of the preservation of all recognized breeds. It helps ensure that these dogs meet the breed standard in structure, movement, and type. It provides a valuable, third-party evaluation of how well our dogs embody the qualities that define the PBGV, both physically and temperamentally.

  • Is it fun for everyone?

Participating in conformation, as well as any performance activity, is a fun and rewarding way to bond with your dog while learning more about the breed. It gives you the chance to meet passionate breeders and exhibitors who can mentor and support you. Whether you’re in it for the ribbons or the relationships, it’s a great way to become a team with your dog while celebrating the PBGV!
